Cell phone diva Joni Blecher discusses hands-free devices for cell phones on CBS5 News

"Think of the Palm Centro as a smartphone with training wheels, says Joni Blecher, editorial director for LetsTalk.com, a wireless plan comparison site. There aren't tons of bells and whistles, but there are enough — including 3G wireless technology, instant messaging, web browsing and a 1.3 megapixel camera — to make it a great deal for the price. There's also plenty of stylistic pizzazz, including a touchscreen and colorful options like pink and red. The tradeoffs: the mediocre Palm operating system, a tiny keyboard and an overall design that appeals more to teens than business users, says Blecher. Available through AT&T, Sprint."

"Site redesign lifts conversion rate 40% at LetsTalk.com"

"Cell phone, wireless and service plan online retailer LetsTalk has updated its site, improving search by making it easier to compare products and incorporating Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to give visitors instant views of product detail. LetsTalk says the incorporation of Ajax has boosted orders stemming from site search by 14%. Overall, the new site has spurred a 40% increase in conversions.

The updated site makes it easier for shoppers to find cell phones that meet their criteria. A new, "Find the Perfect Cell Phone" section at the top of the home page lets customers mix and match plans, carriers and features to find a phone that meets their needs.

LetsTalk also added Ajax technology to its site that allows customers to mouse over images returned in a search to bring up a box with product name and details. The Best Sellers portion of the site also incorporates Ajax. When users hover over a best seller text listing, they see a box to the right that shows an image, price and user ratings.

The relaunch also offers users more navigation options. A new footer on the bottom of each page acts as a mini-site map with links to such categories as carriers, manufacturers and plans."

"For the 20-something crowd, there are so many options that are literally $400 cheaper that do the same things they want," says Delly Tamer, CEO of LetsTalk.com, a site that compiles the deals on phones and plans. He says that with a little shopping, most users can get by without giving up too many features in exchange for a big drop in cost. Yes, there's often a rebate to deal with, and you won't get as much attention from strangers. But with smartphones like the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 offered up at no cost, the pain should be minimal.

"LetsTalk has launched a new service this morning called ToneMine that lets you build your own ringtones. The service uses a multitrack composer that lets you drag and drop short, prerecorded sound clips onto an editing canvas. There are eight themed 'packs' to choose from ranging from hip-hop and salsa, all the way to heavy metal. You also get some shared sound clips that will show up no matter what pack you've chosen.

The eventual goal is a takeaway ringtone you'll be able to use on your phone. You can get it sent directly to your headset via your carrier (which is configured when you sign up for the service), or download it as an MP3 ringtone to transfer on your own. You can also share it with other ToneMine users in a massive pool. There you can preview other people's ringtones and go in to remix them if you'd like to change something. It also keeps track of how many times it's been listened to and downloaded by other users."

"Itemizing doesn't save much on cellphone bills; Lower prices mean personal calls don't add up"
“Many companies require employees with corporate cellphones to itemize and pay for their personal calls. But that rarely saves more than $20 a bill, says In-Stat wireless analysts Bill Hughes. And the savings often are much lower – or non-existent. It usually takes about 10 minutes to itemize a cellphone bill, Hughes says. Companies must pay employees for that time. The wage paid is often greater than the few pennies saved on the phone bill, he says. ‘Splitting up cellphone bills is an exercise in futility,’ says Delly Tamer, CEO of cellphone retailer LetsTalk.”
